Boost Your Immunity: Exercise

Everyone knows about the health benefits of a regular exercise routine. Daily physical activity can help with weight management, strengthen muscle and bones and improve mental health and make you feel happier.

But did you know that exercise could also help boost your immune system?

According to a study published in 2018, researchers from the United Kingdom found that “a physically active lifestyle diminishes the risk of contracting a range of communicable diseases including viral and bacterial infections.”

The study also found daily exercise may also reduce immunological aging – the phenomenon which suggests that our immune responses decrease as we age.

Don’t have a lot of time to work out? No sweat! A quick workout at home can be just as effective as a trip to your local gym.

Researchers from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that a single 20-minute session of moderate exercise can help stimulate your immune system.

“Each time we exercise, we are truly doing something good for our body on many levels, including at the immune cell level,” said Suzi Hong, PhD, the senior author of the study.

A healthy immune system can do more than just prevent you from getting sick. As you age, your immune system does not respond as well to vaccines. As your immunity decreases, you may also be slower to recover from illness, injury and infection.

In addition to exercise, it’s also important to take other measures to improve your immune system as you age. Be sure to maintain a balanced, healthy diet and stay hydrated. Always practice good hygiene and make it a point to get plenty of rest.

While physical activity alone may not prevent you from getting sick, as part of a daily routine that includes these habits, it can be an integral part of a defense to help fend off whatever life may throw at you.
